Moonshot Challenges

What would you fix?

Each year Moonshots Jersey sets the Island's next generation a challenge. These six areas are where we'd start — each with an example question.

These are examples, not limits. The formal 2027 challenges are still being agreed with people who know these problems best. Until then, treat the questions below as provocations. Got something else? Bring it.

  1. 01 · Example challenge

    Live

    Housing, neighbourhoods, public spaces and everyday life.

    The problem
    Many young people who grow up here struggle to picture a home of their own on the Island.
    The question
    What would have to change for Jersey to become an extraordinary place for young people to live independently?
    What better could look like
    New ways to share, adapt or unlock space — and neighbourhoods designed with young people in them.
    What support is available
    Mentors in property, planning and design; introductions to landlords, parishes and housing groups.
    What happens next
    Shortlisted ideas get help designing a small test — one building, one street, one scheme.

  2. 02 · Example challenge

    Learn

    Education, skills and preparing Jersey for a changing world.

    The problem
    Skills the world is asking for don't always show up in the timetable.
    The question
    How could Jersey prepare every young Islander for a world transformed by AI?
    What better could look like
    Learning that happens in workshops, businesses and online as well as classrooms.
    What support is available
    Educators, employers and specialists willing to co-design and host a pilot.
    What happens next
    Promising ideas are tested with a real group of learners and the results reported back.

  3. 03 · Example challenge

    Move

    Transport, accessibility and how we get around.

    The problem
    For people without a car — including many young people — the Island can feel bigger than it is.
    The question
    How could we make getting around Jersey dramatically easier, cleaner or more accessible?
    What better could look like
    Journeys that are simpler, cheaper, safer and more accessible for everyone.
    What support is available
    Data where available, transport expertise, and routes or spaces to trial ideas.
    What happens next
    Selected ideas get support to run a short, measurable trial.

  4. 04 · Example challenge

    Thrive

    Health, wellbeing, sport and quality of life.

    The problem
    Support exists, but it isn't always visible, approachable or designed around young people.
    The question
    What would it take for Jersey to have the healthiest, most supported young people anywhere?
    What better could look like
    Wellbeing and sport that feel like they were built with young Islanders, not for them.
    What support is available
    Clinicians, coaches, charities and designers who can help shape something safe to test.
    What happens next
    Ideas are developed with appropriate expert input before anything is tried.

  5. 05 · Example challenge

    Belong

    Community, culture, inclusion, identity and connection.

    The problem
    Places to gather, create and perform aren't always open, affordable or obvious.
    The question
    How could every young Islander feel they have a real stake — and a real voice — in Jersey's future?
    What better could look like
    More spaces, events and communities that young people run themselves.
    What support is available
    Venues, cultural organisations, funders and people who know how to make events happen.
    What happens next
    Selected ideas get a space and a date to try it for real.

  6. 06 · Example challenge

    Build

    Business, science, technology, AI, sustainability and entirely new ideas.

    The problem
    Great ideas start here, but the path from idea to first customer isn't always clear.
    The question
    What does Jersey need that nobody has built yet — and could a young Islander build it?
    What better could look like
    More young Islanders starting things — companies, research, tools, climate solutions.
    What support is available
    Founders, investors, technologists, scientists and a first customer willing to say yes.
    What happens next
    Shortlisted Moonshots build a prototype or proof of concept before June.
